How to Book KTX in Korea: Trains vs Express Buses for Intercity Travel

For an intercity trip in Korea, search KTX in KORAIL+ first. Then read the exact departure and arrival stations before paying.

If the train time, station or fare doesn't fit the trip, compare an express or intercity bus from the correct terminal.

KTX search → exact station → payment and ticket → bus alternative if needed → platform and seat on travel day

Two changes matter in 2026: Korea integrated the KTX and SRT high-speed rail systems on September 1, and expanded the normal train-ticket booking window to two months on October 1.

1. Search KTX in KORAIL+ First

Since September 1, 2026, Korea's high-speed rail has operated under an integrated KORAIL system.

The KORAIL+ app can search and book high-speed departures from both the Seoul Station and Suseo Station sides of the network. Former SRT services have been integrated into KTX operations.

Older guides that send you to two completely separate KTX and SRT booking systems are now outdated.

KORAIL+ replaced the older KORAIL Talk app in August 2026. If you've used KORAIL Talk before, update it rather than searching for an unrelated replacement.

For a regular reservation:

1. Open KORAIL+ or KORAIL's official reservation website.

2. Enter your travel date and departure and arrival stations.

3. Choose the departure time and available train.

4. Check the fare, passenger count and seat availability.

5. Complete payment and retrieve the issued ticket.

Don't assume every Seoul-area high-speed train starts at Seoul Station. The integrated system includes departures from Suseo, so compare the departure station as well as the train time.

Book up to two months ahead

Starting October 1, 2026, the ordinary advance reservation period for KTX and other covered rail tickets expanded from one month to two months before departure.

That matters if you're planning a weekend in Busan, a holiday trip or a journey with several trains. You can now begin checking seats earlier than older travel guides suggest.

Major holidays can have separate booking schedules and special reservation procedures. Follow KORAIL's holiday notices rather than assuming the ordinary two-month window applies unchanged.

2. Read the Exact Station Before Paying

A long-distance train from Seoul doesn't always depart from Seoul Station. Depending on the route and service, your ticket may show Seoul, Yongsan, Cheongnyangni or Suseo.

Those aren't interchangeable entrances to one railway station. Suseo is in southeastern Seoul, while Seoul Station and Yongsan are in different parts of the city.

Route yourself to the station printed on the ticket.

Fare and available seats

For a Seoul–Busan journey, don't choose the first available departure without checking how you'll reach that station from your accommodation. A slightly later train from a closer station can be easier than a faster train that requires a long transfer across Seoul.

What if your overseas credit card fails?

KORAIL's foreign-language booking website supports payment with overseas-issued credit cards. That doesn't guarantee every foreign bank card will complete every transaction successfully.

If the payment screen fails, check whether the ticket was issued or a reservation was created before trying again. Look in the booking history or ticket-retrieval area and check the payment confirmation.

If nothing was issued, try the official website in a supported browser with a stable connection. A station counter is another option when online payment remains unavailable.

Don't assume a ticket machine accepts the same overseas payment methods as the foreign-language website. KORAIL has specifically promoted overseas-card support through its online foreigner booking channel.

At a station counter, show the destination, date, preferred time range and passenger count.

Example request

BUSAN
SATURDAY
10:00–12:00
2 ADULTS

"I'd like two KTX tickets to Busan, leaving between 10 a.m. and noon."

After payment, retrieve the ticket and check the train number, departure station, departure time, car and seat.

Save the ticket somewhere accessible without relying entirely on a live internet connection. If you've booked several journeys, check the travel date carefully so you don't open the wrong ticket at the station.

3. Use an Express or Intercity Bus When It Fits Better

KTX covers Korea's major high-speed rail corridors, but a bus can fit better when the train schedule is inconvenient or the bus terminal is closer to your destination.

Long-distance buses use several booking systems. KOBUS handles major express-bus services, while BusTago covers many intercity routes. T-money also operates an intercity-bus booking service.

If a city doesn't appear in one system, check the exact departure and arrival terminals before deciding that no bus exists.

Seoul has several different long-distance terminals, including Seoul Express Bus Terminal, Central City, Nambu and Dong Seoul. Use the terminal shown on the reservation.

Check how you can actually pay

An English-language booking page doesn't automatically mean that every overseas-issued card can be used at checkout.

Some bus platforms and payment routes require Korean payment services or account verification. A visitor may be able to search buses and choose a seat but still be unable to complete payment.

Before relying on an online bus booking, check the accepted payment methods. If your overseas card or account isn't supported, consider buying at the terminal counter or using an official or authorized foreigner-friendly booking route.

If a ticket has been purchased online, check whether the mobile ticket itself is valid for boarding or whether it must be collected or printed at the terminal.

October 2026 bus-fare change

For travel on or after October 1, 2026, recheck the live fare before paying.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced a 9% increase in the fare ceilings for intercity and express buses from that date.

This doesn't mean every individual ticket must rise by exactly 9%. The fare you pay depends on the route, service class and current ticket price.

4. Compare the Whole Trip: Busan and Gyeongju

Seoul → Busan

For Seoul–Busan, KTX is the first timetable to check when travel time matters. It's one of Korea's main high-speed corridors.

The bus generally takes longer but may cost less depending on the departure, class and current fare. Check the live KTX and bus prices for the same date rather than comparing an old train fare against a newly adjusted bus fare.

Then add the local leg in Busan. A ticket ending at Busan Station doesn't put you at a hotel in Haeundae, and a long-distance bus may arrive at a different terminal altogether.

If your accommodation is near Busan Station, the rail arrival may be particularly convenient. If you're staying elsewhere, look at the subway, city bus or taxi connection from the actual arrival point.

For a family carrying several suitcases, the easiest station or terminal can matter as much as a modest difference in intercity fare.

Seoul → Gyeongju

Gyeongju shows why the arrival point matters.

High-speed trains arrive at Gyeongju Station, outside the main historic sightseeing area. Express and intercity buses use terminals closer to the central tourist district.

A train may still be the faster intercity ride, but you'll need to add the local journey from Gyeongju Station into town.

If you're visiting Hwangnidan-gil, Daereungwon or other central Gyeongju sights, compare how you'll reach them from the train station or bus terminal.

Don't judge the trip entirely by the KTX journey time. A bus that takes longer between cities may leave you with a shorter local transfer at the destination.

Check the route in three pieces

Intercity train or bus

Arrival station or terminal → next accommodation

5. On Travel Day, Follow the Ticket

At the railway station, find the departure area and read the live departure board. Match the train number and destination on the board with your ticket.

Train
Train number · destination · departure time · platform · car · seat

Bus
Terminal · destination · departure time · boarding gate · seat

Platform information may appear closer to departure, so check the station display as well as the ticket.

On KTX, use the car and seat number printed on your ticket. Car numbers matter when a train has multiple connected units, so check the signs along the platform rather than entering the first open door.

With luggage, use the designated luggage space or keep smaller bags where they won't block seats and aisles.

For a bus, check the boarding gate and the destination shown on the vehicle. The same terminal can have several departures close together.

If you bought a bus ticket online, have the ticket or collection details ready before boarding. Some services use mobile tickets, while others require ticket issuance or collection at the terminal.

If something doesn't match, ask the station or terminal staff before boarding. It's much easier to correct a station, platform or gate mistake while you're still in the departure area.
