Before entering a Seoul subway station, search your actual destination in Naver Map or KakaoMap. For a subway trip, keep four details on screen: line, direction, transfer and exit. For a bus, add the exact boarding stop and remember to tap your card when getting off.
If you take the wrong train or leave through the wrong gate, don't immediately buy another ticket. Check whether you can change platforms inside the station or use the eligible 15-minute re-entry rule.
Search the Actual Destination Before Entering the Station
Search your hotel, restaurant, museum or shop rather than stopping at the nearest subway station.
The route result should show the subway line, direction, transfer point and destination exit. For a bus, check the bus number and the exact boarding stop.
A route to "Gangnam Station" isn't necessarily enough if you're actually going to a restaurant several blocks away. Search the restaurant itself and check which exit puts you closest to its entrance.
The same applies to buses. Two stops with nearly identical names can be on opposite sides of a wide road, or one may be in a central bus lane while the other is beside the sidewalk.
Before walking to the stop, confirm the direction of travel and look at the bus numbers serving that particular platform.

Save a screenshot if you may lose data underground. Station signs can guide you once you're inside, but having the route on your phone avoids searching again while people are moving through the passageway.
For a complicated trip, check the route once more shortly before leaving. Bus arrival estimates, service disruptions and the fastest recommended route can change.
Check the Next Station Before Boarding
The same subway line runs in two directions. Finding the correct line color and number is only the first step.
Before boarding, confirm the direction shown on the platform sign. The next station is often the easiest way to check that you're on the correct side.

Seoul subway signs use line colors, station names and station numbers. Station numbers are especially useful when two English station names look or sound similar.
At some stations, the two directions use separate entrances or platforms. Don't assume that entering the correct station entrance automatically puts you on the correct side.
If you're unsure, compare the next station on the platform sign with the next station displayed in your map app.
On lines with branches or different train destinations, check the destination shown on the train itself as well. Two trains using the same part of a line may not continue to the same final station.

At a transfer station, follow the signs for the next line's color and number. Large interchange stations can require a long walk between platforms.
You may need to follow a passageway, go up or down several levels and walk through another set of signs before reaching the new line.
If the transfer is within the connected paid area, follow the designated transfer route rather than leaving through a street exit. Some transfers involve separate fare gates or special arrangements, so use the marked route and your map app.
A navigation app may show a recommended boarding position such as 4-2.
This identifies a car-and-door position that can shorten your walk to a transfer passage or destination exit. It isn't a seat reservation.
If the train has already arrived, don't rush along the platform just to reach the recommended position. Boarding safely is more important than saving a minute at the interchange.
The transfer signs usually matter more than the first overhead sign marked "Way Out." Follow your connecting line until you're certain you're supposed to leave the station.
Check the Exit Number Before You Arrive
Large stations may have many numbered exits. The wrong exit can place you across a wide road or several blocks from your destination.
Check the recommended exit number before the train arrives. After getting off, follow that number rather than the first general Way Out sign you see.
Even as a Korean, the exit number is the first thing I check at an unfamiliar station. At a large station, choosing the wrong exit can mean a surprisingly long walk before you get back on course.
For visitors carrying luggage, this matters even more. You don't want to reach street level only to discover that you need to cross a major road or walk back around a large building.
This is more useful than simply telling someone to get off at Gangnam Station.
If you have a stroller, wheelchair or heavy suitcase, check the elevator route separately. The shortest numbered exit isn't always the easiest accessible exit.
When a station has several underground shopping passages, check that you're following the exit sign for the street or building you actually need.
On a Bus, Confirm the Stop and Tap Off
For buses, the most common avoidable mistakes are waiting at the wrong stop, boarding in the wrong direction and forgetting to tap off.
2. Confirm the bus number and direction.
3. Board and tap your transit card.
4. Watch your location and the upcoming stop.
5. Press the stop-request button before your stop.
6. Tap your card again when getting off.
Even if you don't plan to transfer, tapping off is a good habit. It helps the fare system calculate the journey correctly, especially on distance-based routes.
If you are changing from a bus to another bus or to the subway, the transfer discount depends on the card record and the time between rides.
How Seoul's transfer discount works
Board the next eligible service within 30 minutes after tapping off.
Extended transfer window
From 9 PM to 7 AM, the allowed interval is generally 60 minutes.
Maximum transfers
Up to four transfers, for a total of five connected boardings.
Same bus route
Reboarding the same bus route doesn't receive the ordinary transfer discount.
The longer night-time window is determined by the next boarding time. Don't assume that taking your first bus before 9 PM automatically gives you 60 minutes.
Transfer discount doesn't necessarily mean the whole journey is free after the first tap. The integrated fare system can add charges based on distance or the type of service used.
If you forget to tap off, your next journey may lose its transfer discount and incur an additional charge.
Each traveler should use their own eligible transit card for a straightforward subway-and-bus trip. Special multiple-passenger bus payment arrangements have different transfer limitations.

Recover From a Wrong Turn at the Next Stop
Wrong-direction subway
Get off at the next station and look for the opposite-direction platform.
Check whether the station allows you to change direction inside the paid area. Some stations have a passage between platforms; others have separate fare-gate arrangements.
If you can reach the opposite platform without leaving the paid area, follow that route. Don't exit the station automatically.
Exited through the gate by mistake
On participating metropolitan subway sections, you can exit and re-enter through the same station and same line within 15 minutes without paying another base fare, subject to the card and operator rules.
Seoul introduced the policy on specified city-operated sections. On June 20, 2026, it expanded to covered KORAIL-operated metropolitan railway sections.
The KORAIL expansion includes designated sections of Lines 1, 3 and 4, as well as the Gyeongui-Jungang, Suin-Bundang, Seohae, Gyeonggang and Gyeongchun lines.
Use the same station and the same subway line.
Re-enter within 15 minutes of tapping out.
Use the same eligible transit card.
The benefit is generally available once during a subway journey and is processed as a transfer.
The policy doesn't cover every railway operator or every section of the metropolitan network.
The 2026 KORAIL expansion applies to eligible transportation-card users. Single-journey ticket and season-ticket holders may need station staff assistance rather than automatic re-entry processing.
Some private railway lines, including AREX and the Shinbundang Line, aren't covered by that expansion. Don't assume that every station with a Seoul-area subway map follows the same rule.
The 15-minute subway re-entry rule is separate from the 30-minute or 60-minute bus-and-subway transfer window. Those rules serve different purposes.
If the gate doesn't accept your card as expected, ask station staff for help rather than repeatedly trying different gates.

Wrong bus
Get off at a safe stop, tap off and search again from your current location.
Don't assume that the stop for the opposite direction is directly across the road. It may be farther along the street or on a different platform in the central bus lane.
If you need to board the same bus route in the opposite direction, remember that reboarding the same route doesn't normally qualify for the standard transfer discount.
Check the new route before crossing a road or moving to another stop.
At Night, Check the Last Train on the Transfer Line
Last-train times vary by line, station, direction, service and date.
On a route with a transfer, the first train may still be running while the connecting line has already finished.
Check the complete journey before leaving, particularly if you're coming back from a concert, dinner or a late flight.
A map app may suggest a connection that is technically possible but leaves very little time to walk between platforms. At a large interchange, that can be difficult when you're unfamiliar with the station.

If speaking Korean feels difficult, show the station name, exit number or destination on your phone. A clear map screen is often easier for someone to understand than a long spoken explanation.
