For a first taxi ride in Korea, have three things ready: one working taxi app, an exact destination and a payment method you understand.
I wouldn't make an app the only plan for a foreign visitor. If you're staying at a hotel or eating at a staffed restaurant, asking someone there to call a taxi can be simpler. Taxi apps are common in Korea, but they aren't effortless for everyone. With luggage and limited Korean, help from a staffed place is often the easiest start.
For a ride late at night, check both the estimated fare and the pickup point before requesting a car. Seoul's late-night taxi surcharges can make the final price noticeably higher than a daytime trip.
1. Choose One Taxi App That Works
k.ride is built by Kakao Mobility for international travelers. The app supports English, simplified and traditional Chinese, and Japanese.
It also provides multilingual destination search and automatic translation for messages between passengers and drivers.
Registration can use Google, Apple or email authentication after entering a mobile number. You don't need the same resident-style Korean mobile account used by some domestic services.
The app displays an estimated fare before dispatch and supports eligible credit and debit cards, including overseas-issued cards, as well as supported mobile payment methods.
The meter fare may not be the entire amount charged through the app. k.ride's published Korean service terms include a service fee for certain ride categories, including a 10% charge for listed services.
The precise total can also depend on the selected vehicle, demand, tolls and other conditions. Check the estimated amount and service details before confirming the request.

Uber Taxi is another option. In Korea, Uber connects riders with licensed local taxi drivers rather than relying exclusively on the private-car model familiar in some other countries.
Uber lists taxi service in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Incheon and Ulsan, among other places. Actual dispatch availability depends on the location, time and nearby drivers.
Enter your pickup point and destination to see the available ride options and the estimated fare. Uber also displays vehicle and driver details to help you identify the assigned car.

If k.ride or Uber Taxi accepts your account, shows the correct destination and can dispatch a car, keep using the service that works for you. Kakao T remains another option for travelers who already have it set up.
If an app isn't working, don't spend the entire evening trying to register repeatedly. Ask your hotel to call a taxi or look for a properly marked available taxi at a safe roadside pickup location.
2. Set the Pickup Point and Exact Destination
Use the hotel, restaurant, station entrance or actual building as your destination. Neighborhood names such as Hongdae, Gangnam or Myeongdong are too broad for a precise drop-off.
The pickup pin matters just as much. At a large station or a divided road, the taxi could be waiting across several traffic lanes from where you're standing.
Before requesting the ride, check whether the pickup location is somewhere a taxi can legally and safely stop. If the app has placed the pin on the wrong side of the street, adjust it before confirming.

Keep your hotel's Korean name and address saved on your phone. If you're using a street taxi without an app, you can show the address directly to the driver.

For a hotel with several entrances, ask which one taxis normally use. This is particularly useful for large shopping complexes, airports and railway stations.
3. Match the Car Before You Get In
Busy stations, hotels and nightlife districts can have several taxis arriving within minutes of each other. Don't get into the first taxi that stops near your pickup pin.
Match the license plate or other vehicle information displayed in the app with the car that arrives. Check the information before opening the door.
If the plate or vehicle doesn't match, confirm with the driver through the app before boarding.
When traveling with a large suitcase, make sure the trunk has enough room before settling into the seat. If you're a group, confirm the number of passengers the selected vehicle can accommodate.
During the ride, the app may show the car's location and route. You can use that information to check your progress, but don't assume every deviation from the suggested route is a problem. Roadworks, traffic and one-way streets can change the route.
4. Know What Can Change the Fare
For an ordinary Seoul standard sedan taxi, the daytime base fare is ₩4,800 for the first 1.6 km. After that, the meter adds distance and time-based charges under the city's fare rules.
The late-night surcharge depends on when you travel.

Those figures apply to the standard Seoul sedan-taxi fare structure, not to every taxi product offered inside an app.
Tolls, travel beyond Seoul city limits and the selected vehicle or service type can affect the final amount. Seoul's published rules also allow an additional surcharge for journeys outside the city boundary, with combined night and out-of-city surcharges reaching up to 60% in applicable circumstances.
Deluxe taxis, large vehicles and branded app services may have different fare systems. Check what you've selected before comparing its price with the standard sedan-taxi meter.
An app's estimated fare is useful, but it may change if you add a stop, change the destination, encounter unexpected traffic or use a service with additional fees.
If you think the driver has taken an unnecessarily long route, first check the live route and traffic conditions. You can politely ask:

5. Pay Once and Keep the Ride Record
Before boarding, check whether the selected ride uses automatic in-app payment or requires payment directly to the driver.
For a ride charged automatically through k.ride or another app, you generally don't need to hand the driver a second payment at the destination. Check the final app receipt rather than assuming a payment request from the driver is correct.
If the app says to pay the driver, use an accepted card, mobile payment method or cash as appropriate for that ride.
A temporary card authorization isn't always the same as the final charge. If you see more than one transaction, check whether one is a pending authorization before treating it as duplicate payment.
Check whether payment was automatic.
Confirm the final fare, including any service fee or toll.
Keep the receipt or app trip record.
Don't pay a second time unless you've confirmed that the first payment failed.
Ordinary Korean taxi rides don't use a standard American-style 15–20% tipping system. Paying the app or meter fare is normal.
Keep a modest amount of Korean won as a backup if your card doesn't work or you lose mobile connectivity.
For a street taxi, ask for a receipt if you need documentation. It can be important if you leave something in the vehicle or want to report a payment problem later.
6. If Something Looks Wrong, Save the Evidence
If the fare still looks wrong after checking the meter, late-night surcharge, tolls and service type, save the information that will help identify the specific trip.

Seoul operates a multilingual Taxi QR Complaint System for reporting problems such as overcharging, refusing passengers and meter violations.
You can access the official reporting service through Seoul Metropolitan Government's taxi-complaint page. The city also provides a 120 Dasan Call Center route for taxi questions and complaints.
For telephone assistance, call 02-120. International callers may need to use the South Korea country code. The city's published guidance lists multilingual assistance for English, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Mongolian, with separate staffed language-service hours.
Seoul also lists taxi120@seoul.go.kr for sending supporting photographs or video when reporting taxi-related problems.
When reporting an incident, provide the full plate number if available. A description such as "white taxi near Gangnam" is much less useful for identifying a particular vehicle.

Use an official taxi stand. Incheon Airport warns passengers about illegal solicitation and overcharging by call vans posing as taxis.
Avoid accepting an unsolicited ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal. For a prearranged transfer, use a legitimate operator and confirm the fare and pickup point in advance.
