A confirmed reservation does not guarantee that you will drive away from the rental counter. Korean rental companies can recheck your passport, International Driving Permit, driving eligibility, vehicle class, payment method and any additional driver at pickup. If something does not match the company's rules, the booking can still fail.
Before paying, confirm the driver's age and experience requirement · accepted IDP class · original documents · payment-card rules · second-driver procedure · CDW terms · pickup time and branch closing time.
Start with rental eligibility, not the cheapest rate
Comparison sites are useful for finding cars and prices. They are much less useful for answering the question that matters at the counter: will this rental company actually approve this driver for this vehicle?
Open the operator's own eligibility page before committing to the booking. LOTTE currently publishes minimum-age, driving-experience, IDP-class and vehicle-category conditions. SK Rent-a-Car publishes its own qualification table for international renters. Those conditions are not identical.
A small passenger car and a larger van may require different IDP classes, and some vehicle categories can carry stricter age or driving-experience requirements.
If a company requires at least one year of driving experience, an online reservation accepting your card does not cancel that requirement. The counter can still reject the rental when the documents do not support the booking.
Do not assume that qualifying for a five-seat compact means you automatically qualify for every van, SUV or premium vehicle shown on the same booking site.
The IDP has to work in Korea, not just look international
Korea's Road Traffic Act allows a qualifying international permit or recognized foreign license to be used for up to one year from the date the driver entered South Korea. The vehicle class must also be one the permit authorizes the driver to operate.
Rental companies commonly require the physical International Driving Permit at pickup. A photograph, PDF or ordinary translated license should not be treated as a substitute for a valid IDP accepted under Korean rules.
Check the issuing authority and the vehicle class before the trip. If there is any doubt, send the rental company a photograph of the document before the cancellation deadline and ask whether it will accept it.
Carry the original documents the company asks for
Do not build the pickup plan around screenshots stored on a phone. Foreign renters should expect original documents to be checked.
A practical file to carry includes:
- your valid passport;
- the original International Driving Permit accepted for the vehicle class;
- your original home-country driver's license if the company requires it;
- an acceptable payment card;
- your reservation confirmation.
The home-country license is one area where company instructions deserve attention. SK Rent-a-Car currently requires it to verify driving experience. LOTTE's own international guidance also tells visitors to bring their home-country license, although some LOTTE eligibility and FAQ pages emphasize the passport and IDP.
The sensible response to that inconsistency is not to argue about which webpage wins. Carry the original home license if you have it and check the document list attached to the reservation you actually made.
The passport also matters because the date of entry is relevant to the one-year Korean driving period.
If the English names on your passport, IDP, home license and payment card differ substantially, ask the rental company before arrival. The pickup counter is a poor place to discover that the company cannot reconcile the documents.
Card rules deserve their own check
Do not turn one rental-company payment rule into a nationwide Korean rule. Even one company's English pages can describe different payment conditions for different booking paths.
LOTTE's current international FAQ says debit and credit cards can be used by international customers. Its reservation eligibility page, however, says the rental fee should be paid with the main driver's own credit card and states that debit cards, cash and dollars are not accepted in that reservation process.
That is precisely why the page attached to your booking matters more than a general answer found elsewhere on the site.
If your reservation says the main driver's credit card is required, arrive with that card. Do not assume another branch, another language page or a different rental product follows the same payment rule.
If you have a second internationally enabled card, carrying it is useful. A foreign card that worked online can still run into a separate authorization or terminal problem at pickup.
Register every person who may drive
If two people will share the driving, put both on the rental agreement. Do not leave a spouse, friend or colleague off because they “might only drive for an hour.”
LOTTE's current reservation information says a second driver must meet the eligibility requirements and accompany the main driver at pickup with the required driving document. Other companies can use their own registration procedure.
That short handover after a long drive is exactly the kind of situation that can become expensive if the person behind the wheel was never authorized under the rental agreement.
If several people are traveling together, decide who may actually drive before pickup and bring the documents for each of them.
Read the CDW terms before you reach the desk
The rental counter is a poor place to meet terms such as CDW, deductible, excess, excluded damage and loss-of-use for the first time.
Vehicle-damage products are not standardized across every Korean rental company. The deductible, coverage ceiling, exclusions and treatment of single-vehicle accidents can all depend on the product attached to the reservation.
Read the conditions while you still have time to compare them. Pay attention to tires and wheels, towing, unauthorized drivers, single-car damage and charges for the period when a damaged car cannot be rented.
Those details tell you more than a package name such as “Full,” “Premium” or “Super.”

Airport pickup may include a shuttle transfer
“Airport rental car” does not necessarily mean your vehicle is waiting directly outside the terminal.
Jeju makes this especially clear. Jeju International Airport's current English guidance directs arriving passengers toward Gates 3 and 5, across the road and along the covered path to the Rental Car House. From there, customers board the shuttle for their rental provider.
That extra movement matters after a late flight. Your aircraft landing time and your arrival at the rental counter are not the same thing.
| Time | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Flight arrival | The aircraft may land well before you are ready to leave the terminal |
| Baggage pickup | Can add significant time after landing |
| Shuttle transfer | May be required between the terminal and rental facility |
| Branch closing time | The time that can actually stop you from completing pickup |
If you are renting specifically in Jeju, first decide whether you need the car for the whole trip. The separate guide Jeju Car Rental: Do You Need a Car? Rental vs Bus, Taxi & Tours compares the alternatives before you book.
Spend five minutes documenting the car
Before leaving the pickup area, record the car's condition on your phone. Walk around the entire vehicle slowly instead of taking one photograph from each end.
Cover both bumpers, every door, mirrors, windscreen and wheels. Take close-ups of existing scratches or dents, but also keep wider photographs showing where each mark is on the car.
Then photograph:
- the fuel gauge or EV battery level;
- the odometer;
- dashboard warning lights, if any;
- the rental company's existing-damage sheet or inspection screen;
- the license plate.
If you see a scratch that is missing from the company's record, raise it before departure. Five minutes at pickup is easier than trying to prove weeks later that a mark was already there.
Ask four operational questions before leaving
A rental contract can run for several pages. Four answers are especially useful once you are actually on the road:
- What exact fuel does this vehicle use?
- Does it have a working Hi-Pass setup, and how are tolls settled?
- Which number should I call first if the vehicle is damaged?
- What fuel or battery level is required at return?
Save the accident and roadside-assistance number in your phone. If an important explanation is only on a Korean contract page, photograph that page before you leave.

Set up the car while it is still parked
Enter the first destination before the car moves. Adjust the seat and mirrors, connect your phone if you need it, and mount the device securely before leaving the rental lot.
Your first busy Korean intersection is a bad place to discover where the hazard lights are or which navigation app can actually find the hotel.
If the built-in navigation supports English, change the language before departure. Keep the hotel's Korean name and road address on your phone as a backup because English place-name searches are not equally reliable on every navigation system.

Why a confirmed booking can still fail
| At pickup | Possible problem |
|---|---|
| IDP | Wrong issuing document, expired permit, copy instead of original or unsuitable vehicle class |
| Driver | Age or driving experience does not meet the booked vehicle's requirement |
| Home license | A company that uses it to verify driving experience cannot complete the check |
| Second driver | Not registered, not present when required or missing the required documents |
| Payment | Card type, cardholder or authorization does not satisfy the booking terms |
| Arrival | You reach the branch after the agreed pickup window or closing time |
The best time to solve any of these problems is while the reservation can still be changed. A confirmation email proves that a booking exists. It does not replace the driver's eligibility check.
If something goes wrong after pickup
Keep the reservation, contract, pickup photographs and the company's emergency number together on your phone.
If the problem is a toll, parking payment, fuel question or return procedure, use the rental company's instructions first. If the vehicle is damaged, notify the company promptly and preserve the accident record.

Before you click Pay
1. Confirm that the main driver qualifies for the exact vehicle class.
2. Check the IDP and original-document requirements.
3. Save the payment-card conditions for your booking.
4. Register any second driver properly.
5. Read the actual CDW terms.
6. Check branch hours and any airport shuttle transfer.
7. Leave five minutes at pickup for photographs and setup.
Do those things before the trip and the rental counter becomes much less mysterious. Most of the unpleasant surprises come from details that were visible before the booking, but were never checked.
