Choose the card by the problem you need to solve: transit only, foreign-cash conversion, or app-managed prepaid spending.
These products overlap, but they are not interchangeable. The most common mistake is to see one physical card and assume every balance on it can be funded, spent and refunded in the same way. WOWPASS and NAMANE each combine more than one function, while a standard physical T-money card is primarily a transit tool.
WOWPASS — foreign-cash exchange + Korean prepaid payment + transit
NAMANE — app-managed Pay + Transit functions
MobileTmoney now adds a separate 2026 exception for eligible Apple devices and supported payment cards. Do not apply its app rules to a normal plastic T-money card.
1. Keep Four Products Separate
| Product | Main job | 2026 funding point |
|---|---|---|
| Physical T-money | Transit | Standard convenience-store/subway purchase and top-up: cash route |
| MobileTmoney | Mobile transit | International-user Apple Pay top-up supports Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay and JCB |
| WOWPASS | Prepaid shopping + T-money transit | WOWPASS and transit balances are separate |
| NAMANE | Pay + Transit | International Visa/Mastercard/JCB listed for Pay-balance top-up |
Start with the job column, not the brand name. Then confirm three separate questions: how you obtain the card, how you fund the exact balance you need and what recovery options exist if the card or phone is lost.
2. Use Standard T-money When Transit Is the Only Gap
If your foreign card already covers hotels, restaurants and shops, standard T-money may be all you need.
KTO's May 2026 transport guide says foreign-issued cards are not accepted for the standard prepaid T-money purchase/top-up route at convenience stores and subway stations; it lists cash.
New Seoul Lines 1–8 ticket machines can accept foreign-issued cards for certain products such as single-use tickets. That is a different machine/product route.
This makes physical T-money a simple choice, but it also means you should keep enough KRW for the first load and later reloads. Do not arrive with only a foreign credit card and assume the convenience-store cashier can put that card's funds directly onto standard T-money.
Load for the next few days rather than the entire trip on day one. A smaller working balance limits the loss if the card disappears and makes it easier to finish the balance before departure.
3. MobileTmoney Is the 2026 Exception
MobileTmoney's current App Store listing offers international users a no-sign-up route and Apple Pay top-up using Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay and JCB.
Visa is not currently listed for that top-up route.
This mobile exception does not change the physical-card cash rule.
The current listing also gives device requirements: iPhone XS/XR or later with iOS 17.2 or later, and supported Apple Watch models with watchOS 10.2 or later. Check the live listing on the device you will actually carry; an eligible bank card does not help if the phone or watch is outside the supported route.
A phone-based transit setup also needs a power plan. Keep the device charged, know which device holds the transit card and do not make your only backup payment method dependent on the same phone.
4. WOWPASS Uses Separate Payment and Transit Balances
WOWPASS's general prepaid balance can be used at Korean offline card merchants. The same card contains a T-money transit function.
The official guide states that T-money balance is separate from the WOWPASS balance. Its current app also advertises transport-balance checking and top-up.
Old reviews describing only the previous transit top-up route may therefore be stale.
The practical consequence is that a large number shown as WOWPASS balance does not prove the subway gate has enough value. Before the first ride, open the relevant balance view or check the transit balance at a supported machine. Treat shopping payment and transit as two ledgers even though they sit on one card.
WOWPASS is most useful when its foreign-cash exchange and prepaid shopping workflow solves a real problem for you. If you already have a low-fee international card and only need transit, adding another prepaid shopping balance may create more leftover money rather than more convenience.
5. NAMANE Separates Pay and Transit Too
NAMANE's current Google Play listing separates Pay Balance from Transit Balance and lists international Visa, Mastercard and JCB for topping up the Pay Balance.
Do not assume that the same international-card transaction directly fills Transit Balance. Check the current app flow before entering the gate.
The app also provides transaction history and a pause function for a lost card.
That app control can be valuable for travelers who want to review payments or pause a missing card. It does not turn the product into a conventional credit card. Prepaid limits, eligible merchants, top-up rules and refund procedures remain product-specific.
6. Match the Product to Your Actual Trip
| Your situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your normal card works and you only need buses/subways | Physical T-money | Fewest extra balances to manage |
| You have a supported Apple device and supported top-up card | MobileTmoney | Mobile transit without treating plastic-card rules as universal |
| You want foreign-cash conversion plus Korean prepaid spending | WOWPASS | Those are core parts of its combined workflow |
| You value app history, pause controls and Pay/Transit management | NAMANE | App-managed prepaid functions are the deciding benefit |
Families do not necessarily need one identical product for everyone. A child or companion who only rides transit may need a simpler setup than the person managing shopping payments and foreign-currency funds.
7. Use a Controlled Arrival Setup
- Keep one ordinary international card available for the airport and hotel.
- Obtain or activate the travel card through its official route.
- Fund only the balance needed for the first test.
- Confirm the Pay and Transit balances separately when the product has both.
- Make one small merchant payment if applicable.
- Make one transit tap and check the remaining transit balance.
Do not perform several large top-ups while troubleshooting. If something fails, change one variable at a time: funding card, amount, network connection, kiosk or app route. Save the error screen and transaction record before trying again.
8. Diagnose the Balance That Actually Failed
If a shop payment fails but transit works, check the Pay balance, merchant eligibility and card status. If a gate rejects the card but shopping works, check the Transit balance and whether the transit function was activated. If a top-up is charged but the displayed balance does not change, keep the receipt or app transaction ID and contact the product's official support before repeating the same top-up.
For a lost card, act on the feature that the specific product actually offers. An app pause may protect an app-managed payment balance, but you should not assume it recovers every transit balance or an anonymous physical T-money card.
9. Plan the Last Two Days Before Loading More
Before the final top-up, estimate the remaining transit rides and purchases. Pay and Transit balances may have different refund routes, service locations, minimums or fees. Check the current official procedure for your exact product instead of assuming one refund action empties the whole card.
The easiest leftover balance is the one you never create. Small staged loads reduce the need to visit a kiosk or service counter shortly before the airport.
10. Keep a Conventional Credit Card for Hotel Holds
Do not make a prepaid travel card your only payment method. Hotel authorization holds and large refundable transactions are better handled with a normal international card with spare limit.
Carry a second conventional card separately from the first. A transit/prepaid product is a useful layer in the wallet, not a replacement for every payment route in Korea.
Tmoney announced an EMV open-loop partnership on September 17, 2026. The announcement describes development, testing and staged future rollout. It does not mean every Seoul gate already accepts a foreign bank card directly.
App features, supported cards, fees and refund routes can change. Recheck the official product page immediately before travel, especially if your plan depends on a specific foreign-card top-up.
