At check-in, ask two things: “Is this a charge or an authorization hold?” and “What amount will be held?” At checkout, collect the itemized folio before interpreting the banking app.
Check-in question → checkout folio → pending/posted status → hotel evidence → issuer escalation
1. Ask About the Hold Before the Card Is Authorized
A prepaid room can still generate another card transaction at check-in. The hotel may authorize room/tax still due, incidentals or both.
Ask whether it is a hold or charge and ask the exact amount for your reservation.
IHG's current terms explicitly allow authorization holds on credit or debit cards. Marriott's terms likewise describe room/tax and an incidental amount that can vary by location.
2. Credit and Debit Cards Feel Different
A credit-card authorization reduces available credit. A debit-card authorization can reduce money available in the linked account.
With consecutive hotel stays, an old authorization may still be visible when the next property requests a new one.
3. Collect the Itemized Folio at Checkout
Review room rate, tax, restaurant/minibar/laundry or other incidentals and the final amount actually charged.
Ask whether the unused authorization was released or reversed. Keep any release reference together with the folio.
4. Read the Banking App by Transaction Status
| Status | Meaning | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Pending / authorization | Reserved funds or credit | Compare with check-in hold and folio |
| Posted | Settled charge | Compare with final folio |
| Reversed / released | Unused authorization cancelled | Allow issuer account status to update |
| Refund | Credit against a posted charge | Track the separate credit |
Two entries with the hotel name are not automatically two final charges.
5. Do Not Invent One Korea-Wide Release Time
IHG says release of an unused hold depends on the card provider or financial institution. Marriott's current digital-entry terms give another provider-specific example in which an issuer hold may remain for up to five business days after departure.
Those are provider examples, not a Korean national rule.
6. Escalate a Wrong Posted Charge With the Folio
If the posted amount does not match the hotel bill, contact the hotel first. Ask for a corrected folio and refund or void evidence.
If the merchant cannot resolve a wrong final charge, take the records to the issuer.
