Choose a Jeju base in four steps: transport → repeated region → first/last flight → whether moving hotels removes several long trips.

1. With or Without a Car? Start Here
No car: north and south are both realistic
Without a car, check airport access, usable bus routes, evening food, taxi availability and tour pickup points around the actual property.
Jeju City is practical when the airport, northern Jeju and a short stay dominate the schedule.
A southern base can also work without a car. The current Jeju Bus Information System lists airport limousine routes including 600/601 toward the Jungmun–Seogwipo corridor and 800/801 connecting the airport with Seogwipo routes. Exact stops differ by service.
If several days are concentrated around southern Jeju, compare Seogwipo or Jungmun against Jeju City before booking.

With a car: match the hotel to the region you will repeat
A rental car expands the practical range of pensions, villas and coastal stays. It also makes repeated cross-island driving easy to underestimate.
Group the main itinerary first:
Aewol · Hyeopjae · Hallim · west-coast cafés
SOUTH
Seogwipo · Jungmun · southern waterfalls · south-coast routes
EAST
Hamdeok · Seongsan · Udo · Seopjikoji
If west, south and east Jeju appear on consecutive days, map those routes before choosing the hotel.
2. Jeju City and Seogwipo — Two Practical Bases
Jeju City
Jeju City gives you fast airport access, a large hotel selection, restaurants, shopping, taxis and major bus connections.
It works particularly well for a short first stay, a late arrival, an early departure or an itinerary concentrated in northern Jeju.
If the daytime schedule repeatedly heads south, west or far east, put those actual journeys into the map before choosing the airport-side convenience.
Seogwipo
Seogwipo works well when southern waterfalls, Olle routes, Seogwipo city and the south coast make up several days of the trip.
For a no-car stay, check the exact hotel against the bus stops and the southern attractions you will actually use.
3. Jungmun, Aewol/Hyeopjae, Hamdeok and Seongsan
Jungmun — resort time matters
Jungmun is a strong candidate for families and travelers who plan to use the hotel's pool, breakfast, resort facilities or downtime.
If most days are spent outside the property exploring southern Jeju, compare the exact Jungmun hotel with Seogwipo alternatives.
Aewol / Hyeopjae — western Jeju
The west coast suits café stops, beaches, coastal driving and smaller pensions or pool villas.
Aewol covers a broad area. Two properties carrying the same area label can have very different access to dinner, groceries and the places on your itinerary.
With a car, map: hotel → dinner → convenience store → next morning's first stop.
Hamdeok — beach time is part of the stay
Hamdeok works when the beach itself occupies part of the day rather than functioning as a short sightseeing stop.
Visit Jeju currently describes Hamdeok as an eastern Jeju beach with cafés and visitor facilities around the shore.
Seongsan — early east-side plans
Seongsan becomes useful when Seongsan Ilchulbong, Udo, Seopjikoji and eastern Jeju form a real cluster.
An early sunrise or Udo departure is much easier to schedule when you are already staying in the east.
4. Treat the First and Last Night Separately
The main accommodation region does not have to control the first and last night.
Consider a separate airport-area night when the trip includes:
Very early departure
Rental-car pickup or return timing that conflicts with the main stay
For example, three southern sightseeing days can still justify a Seogwipo main stay even if the final night moves back toward Jeju City for an early flight.
Include the additional checkout, luggage move and rental-car logistics in that decision.
5. Split the Stay When One Move Removes Several Long Trips
A split stay is useful when the itinerary itself separates into geographic clusters.
West-heavy first half → east-heavy second half

One hotel move should remove several long journeys before it earns the extra checkout and luggage move.
