Restaurant Reservations in Korea: CATCHTABLE, NAVER, Waitlists & Walk-Ins

Last updated: September 19, 2026 · Restaurant access rules can differ by branch and date

A restaurant name is only the first step in Korea. The exact branch tells you whether you need a reservation, a live waitlist or a walk-in plan.

A fine-dining room may release timed tables weeks ahead. A busy Seongsu restaurant may use a same-day digital queue. A neighborhood barbecue place may take walk-ins. Another branch of the same brand may use a different system.

Start with the exact restaurant branch, then identify how that branch admits customers. Only then do you need to decide whether to open CATCHTABLE, NAVER, the restaurant's own site or simply the front door.

1. Read the Access Method Before You Read the Reviews

Four access modes cover most situations a visitor will meet:

Access mode What you are securing What to watch
Advance reservationA table at a date and timeDeposit, cancellation, late-arrival and party-size rules
Remote waitlistA place in today's moving queueReturn window and live queue progress
On-site waitlistA queue position after arrivalTablet, QR code, host desk or local phone requirement
Walk-inThe next available tableMeal rush, last order and branch-specific hours

A remote waitlist can show twenty parties ahead and still move faster or slower than expected. Table size, meal length, no-shows and the restaurant's own seating rules all change the pace. Treat the queue number as live information, not a promised clock time.

For an on-site waitlist, look around the entrance before joining a physical line. A tablet or QR code may be the real queue.

2. CATCHTABLE Global and NAVER Now Cover More Foreigner Friction

CATCHTABLE Global is the easiest first check for many popular restaurants. Current Korea Tourism Organization guidance says international users can sign up with Google, Apple or email without a Korean phone number, and use real-time reservations or remote waitlists at participating restaurants. Overseas-issued cards can be used where a reservation deposit is required.

The useful detail is the button on the exact listing. Reserve means the restaurant has released timed tables. Join Remote Waitlist means you are entering today's queue. If neither appears, check whether the listing gives on-site instructions.

NAVER Map became more practical for short-term visitors in June 2026. NAVER introduced Passport Verification on June 4 for users with passports issued outside Korea. Supported NAVER Booking, NAVER Order and payment functions can then be used without Korean mobile-phone verification.

Passport Verification removes an account barrier. The business still has to offer NAVER Booking, and the exact product may have its own conditions. Check the listing instead of assuming that every restaurant on NAVER can be booked.

3. For a High-Demand Restaurant, Find the Release Schedule

When the restaurant matters to the trip, checking today's calendar repeatedly is usually less useful than finding out when the next block of tables opens.

Restaurants may release tables monthly, weekly, on a fixed announcement date or in shorter rolling blocks. Some return canceled tables to inventory. There is no Korea-wide rule that bookings open exactly thirty days in advance.

Save four details:

Reservation release date · your travel date · whether cancellations return to inventory · party-size limit

Restaurant Instagram accounts and official websites are often the fastest place to see release notices for chef restaurants, pop-ups and newly opened venues.

If several branches exist, save the branch name with the reservation date. A correct booking at the wrong branch is still a missed meal.

4. Read Deposits and Cancellation Rules as One Package

A reservation deposit can be perfectly reasonable for a high-demand restaurant. The decision changes once you put the cancellation deadline beside it.

Deposit amount · cancellation deadline · late-arrival rule · no-show rule · party-size change

A restrictive booking deserves extra attention on a KTX travel day, tour day or final night in Korea. A delay outside your control can otherwise turn a restaurant deposit into a sunk cost.

Save the confirmation screen and the cancellation terms at the time you book. If the restaurant later becomes the one fixed point in the evening, you know exactly what has to be protected.

5. Keep a Remote Waitlist Local

Once you join a live queue, use nearby time rather than crossing the city. A café, shop, gallery or short walk within the same neighborhood is easier to abandon when the queue starts moving quickly.

Keep the restaurant's arrival rule on the screen. Some systems require you to check in or return within a limited period after your turn is called.

For on-site-only waiting, arriving close to opening or before the main meal rush can reduce the amount of the day that depends on an uncertain queue.

6. Confirm the Booking Before You Leave the Hotel

The last check is short:

Exact branch · reservation time or live queue · confirmed status · cancellation/late-arrival rule · route to the entrance

On NAVER, a booking request can be different from a confirmed booking. On any platform, read the status shown in the actual reservation record before building the rest of the evening around it.

If the account works but payment alone fails, treat that as a payment problem. If the identity step fails, move to the phone and identity-verification guides. Separating the broken stage prevents repeated attempts at the wrong fix.

7. Save One Backup in the Same Area

For one high-demand dinner, save another restaurant within walking distance before you go. It does not need to be a second famous place; it needs to be a place you would actually be happy to eat if the first queue becomes impractical.

That keeps a restaurant failure from becoming a transport problem. In restaurant-heavy areas such as Seongsu, Yeonnam, Hannam, Gangnam and Ikseon-dong, a backup can often be only a few blocks away.
