Closing a Korean bank account can feel like the neatest thing to do before a flight home.
It becomes less neat when your final salary arrives next week, the landlord returns the deposit after inspection, or a card refund is still moving through the system.
Choose the account-closing date from the last expected financial transaction, not from the flight departure time.
About 30 days before leaving: list money still coming in
Final salary
Housing deposit
Card refunds
Tax-related refunds where applicable
Other employment, pension or insurance settlements that apply to your situation
Not every foreign resident is entitled to every item on that list.
Use it to identify what is actually pending in your case.

Mobile phone bill
Gas, electricity and maintenance
Insurance

Automatic bank transfers
Do not empty the account while a final card bill is still scheduled.
Likewise, do not assume that cancelling a service automatically cancels every payment that is already in processing.
One week before departure: test future mobile access
If your Korean phone number will soon be cancelled, ask what happens to mobile banking authentication.
Check OTP, certificate, login method and the bank’s registered phone number.
If you plan to keep the account for several months, complete any device or authentication update while you are still in Korea.

Do not close the account before a housing deposit is returned
If a landlord still owes you a deposit, maintaining the Korean receiving account can keep the transaction simple.
Closing the account first can create a new question about sending a large amount overseas.
Finish the housing handover and deposit-return process, then decide what to do with the bank account.
Check unsettled card transactions before cancelling the card
A purchase can be approved before the final card settlement date.
A hotel or online-shopping refund can also appear later.
Before closing a credit card, check installments, unsettled purchases and expected refunds.
Check-card refunds can also return to the linked bank account after the original purchase date.
If you keep the account, give it a reason and an end date
“I might need it someday” is not a very useful management plan.
Keep it until the housing deposit arrives.
Keep it until the final salary and tax settlement finish.
Keep it until a card refund is complete.
Once the reason has disappeared, review the account again.
Never sell, lend or hand over the bank account
Foreign residents preparing to leave can encounter offers to “buy” a bankbook, card, OTP or account access.
Do not do it.
Korea’s Electronic Financial Transactions Act prohibits transfer of access media and also prohibits specified lending or circulation of access media for compensation or criminal use.
A transferred card, OTP or account can be used for voice phishing, illegal gambling, money laundering or other criminal activity while your identity remains connected to the financial product.
Do not leave every financial task for airport day
Large overseas transfers, card closure and account closure can all create questions.
Do them while bank branches and customer support are still easy to reach.
The departure day should ideally contain travel, not a race between a bank counter and airport check-in.
After leaving Korea, check the account once more
If you kept it open, confirm that mobile access still works.
Check whether the final automatic payments were completed.
If the account’s purpose is now finished, make the final transfer and ask the bank how closure can be completed from your situation.
곧 한국을 출국합니다. 계좌를 유지할 수 있나요?
I will leave Korea soon. Can I keep this account?
해외에서도 모바일뱅킹을 사용할 수 있는지 확인해 주세요.
Please check whether I can use mobile banking overseas.
Bank closure and overseas-access procedures differ by institution. Confirm your bank’s current process before departure.
