A bank account can work perfectly at the counter and still become frustrating when you open the app at home.

For foreign residents, “mobile banking is not working” can describe several completely different problems. The fastest route is to identify the last screen that worked.

In my own day-to-day banking in Korea, more than 90% of what I do happens in apps. I rarely visit a branch now unless I need something that is easier to handle in person or I happen to need cash and there is no convenient ATM nearby. For routine transfers and account checks, the app is faster and, in my experience, often cheaper on fees. Foreign residents can face extra setup friction at first, but once verification is working, mobile banking is very much part of normal everyday banking here.

Where does it fail?

App will not start → first login fails → phone identity verification fails → account appears but transfer fails → OTP/certificate fails → new phone cannot be registered.

If the app itself is the problem, confirm you installed the right one

Korean financial groups can operate several apps: main banking, card, authentication, foreigner services and overseas remittance.

The names are often similar.

Use the bank’s official website or branch instructions rather than an app-store search alone. Then check whether the English or multilingual interface is built into that app or provided through a separate service.

If identity verification fails, compare registered information

Korean mobile banking frequently relies on identity information connected to your Korean phone service.

A difference in the way your name, number or Residence Card information has been registered can create friction.

Do not tell the bank only that “verification does not work.” Bring the exact error screen and ask the bank to confirm:

  • the English name on the bank profile;
  • the phone number registered with the bank;
  • whether the account customer information is up to date;
  • which identity-verification method the app is trying to use.

If you can log in but cannot transfer, look at the security stage

If the balance appears correctly, your basic account connection is already working.

The failure may be occurring later: transfer password, certificate, OTP, device authentication or daily transfer limit.

This is why saving the exact screen matters.

An OTP problem and a limited-account problem can both end with “transfer failed,” but they require different fixes.

Change phones while the old setup still works

Many foreign residents discover bank re-registration only after the old phone has already been reset, sold or taken offline.

If you are replacing the device, check the bank’s phone-change process while your old device and Korean number are still available.

You may need to re-register the device, reissue a certificate or activate another security method.

Changing your Korean phone number is a separate event

A new number from the mobile carrier does not automatically update every bank record.

Check the contact number stored with the bank. Confirm that transaction notifications and phone-based identity checks now reach the new number.

If the old number is about to be cancelled, do not wait until the last day to discover what still depends on it.

Do not treat every MVNO or prepaid number the same

Korea has standard postpaid plans, prepaid services and many MVNO products.

Support for identity verification can depend on the carrier, plan and service being used.

A blanket statement such as “MVNO numbers do not work with Korean banking” is too broad.

The practical question is whether your current number is registered under your identity and supported by the bank’s verification route.

Broader Korean phone-verification problems belong in the existing Phone & Internet series.

Be suspicious of anyone who asks you to install a remote-control app

Police, prosecutors, banks and financial regulators are common identities used in Korean voice-phishing scams.

If someone claims they can fix a banking problem by sending an unfamiliar app or asking for remote access to your phone, stop.

Use the official bank number from its website or app. If you believe money has already been sent to a scammer, contact the bank and police immediately and ask about payment suspension.

Never send an OTP number, full password or card PIN to someone who contacted you first.

Save the error, not your secrets

A screenshot of the error message can be useful.

A screenshot containing a full account number, password, certificate password or active OTP code should not be shared casually.

Record the time, app, stage and message. Show the screen directly to official support where possible.
