Bank Transfers in Korea: Rent, Auto-Transfers & Wrong Transfers

Account transfers are woven into daily life in Korea. Rent, shared meals, tuition, second-hand purchases and small personal payments can all arrive as a bank-account number in a message.

The system is fast. That makes the ten seconds before you press Send valuable.

Scene 1: Paying monthly rent

Before the first payment:

Compare the account in the lease or verified instruction with the recipient name displayed by your banking app.

If the landlord changes the receiving account during the lease, do not rely on one unexpected text message.

Confirm the change using an established contact route and, for a significant payment, keep the written notice.

Once the account is established, a scheduled transfer can make monthly rent easier. Set the date with enough balance in the account and review it when the lease changes.

Scene 2: Sending money to a friend or seller

Korean banking apps normally display the account holder’s name after you enter the bank and account number.

Read it before confirming.

The displayed name may not always be the person’s everyday name. A seller may use a business account or a family member’s account. Ask when the name is different instead of ignoring it.

For second-hand purchases, keep the listing, chat, account information and transfer record until the transaction is complete.

Scene 3: Recurring bills and automatic transfers

Phone bills, insurance, maintenance charges and card payments may leave automatically.

This is convenient until you change banks or prepare to leave Korea.

Review recurring transfers before closing an account. A forgotten payment can fail after the balance is moved overseas, while an un-cancelled subscription may continue charging after you leave.

Before every large transfer, check three things

Account number.

Recipient name.

Amount.

For a housing deposit or another unusually large payment, confirm the receiving details against the contract or other primary document rather than a copied message alone.

If you sent money to the wrong account, contact your bank first

Once a completed transfer reaches another account, there may be no simple “undo” button.

Contact the sending bank and request the mistaken-transfer return process.

If the money is not returned after the financial institution has attempted the normal return process, Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation operates a separate support program for eligible cases.

As of the current guidance, key conditions include:

  • mistaken transfer amount from ₩50,000 up to ₩100 million;
  • application within one year of the transfer;
  • the financial institution’s return process has already been attempted;
  • the case is not an ordinary personal dispute or fraud payment.
Fraud is different.

If you were deceived into sending money, especially in suspected voice phishing, contact the bank and police immediately and ask about payment suspension. Do not wait for the mistaken-transfer support route.

Keep evidence before a dispute becomes complicated

For rent, save the lease and bank receipt.

For a private purchase, save the listing and conversation.

For a mistaken transfer, note the exact time, amount and account used.

These records do not guarantee recovery, but they let the bank or relevant authority understand what actually happened.

If the app will not send the amount, check the limit before blaming the transfer

A transfer can fail even when every account number is correct.

If your mobile daily limit is too low, return to the limited-account guide. If the app is asking for authentication you cannot complete, use the mobile-banking guide.
