Korea’s fall color starts in the higher northern mountains and works south. That movement is why “late October” can be excellent for one destination and too early or too late for another.
For 2026, Seoraksan was forecast to show its first fall color around October 3 and peak around October 25. Bukhansan near Seoul was forecast to peak around November 4, with Jirisan and Hallasan later still.
Seoraksan mountain foliage, Seoul palaces and parks, Jirisan hiking and Hallasan are separate trips with separate peak windows.

Use peak dates rather than first-color dates

“First color” does not mean the whole mountain has reached its most dramatic state.
If foliage is the purpose of an international trip, the peak window usually matters more. Even then, use it as a forecast rather than a guarantee. Temperature, wind and rainfall continue to affect the actual progression.
Seoul foliage does not require a mountain
Bukhansan is an obvious option for hikers, but Seoul gives you several easier fall days.
Palace grounds, Seoul Forest, Olympic Park, Namsan and tree-lined neighborhoods change through the same season without requiring a full hiking day.
This is useful for travelers who want autumn scenery but do not have mountain footwear, trail experience or a spare day for transport.
Mountain days need a transport plan
A peak-weekend visit to Seoraksan or another famous mountain is not only a hiking decision.
Include the trip from your accommodation, bus or parking pressure, cable-car queues where relevant, trail time and sunset.
A four-hour route on paper can become a much longer day after transfers and waiting.
Check park notices and trail conditions on the morning of travel, especially after rain.
Weekdays are valuable during peak foliage
Korean fall weekends can be busy around famous mountain destinations and arboretums.
If your itinerary allows it, use a weekday for the mountain and keep Seoul shopping, museums or neighborhood days for the weekend.
That is often a more meaningful change than trying to find a supposedly “secret” foliage destination that requires another two hours of transport.

October and November need different clothing
Seoul’s October normal is around 20.2°C for the daily high and 10.6°C for the low. November falls to roughly 11.9°C and 3.5°C.
An early-October city walk and an early-November mountain morning can therefore require very different layers.
Carry a light insulating layer for mountain days and check the destination forecast rather than copying Seoul’s city temperature.

Do not chase every patch of color
A Seoul day can pair one major autumn location with the surrounding neighborhood instead of crossing the city for three foliage stops.
Gyeongbokgung plus Seochon, Seoul Forest plus Seongsu, or Namsan plus Myeongdong gives the day more texture and less subway time.
If photographs matter, an early start also reduces the number of people sharing the same path.
Replace the forecast every year
The 2026 dates are useful for the current season only.
When the next autumn arrives, update the official forecast and keep the rest of the process: choose a region, identify its peak window, check transport and recheck the weather immediately before the trip.
