After a Korean street-food stop, there are four things worth sorting out before you leave: your rubbish, a restroom, your hotel's address and the complete route home.
The last one matters most if you're eating late. A subway train may still be running from your nearest station even though the line you need to transfer to has already stopped. Check the entire journey, not just the first train.
- Ask the stall where to return cups, skewers and food waste.
- Find a restroom that is open and accessible now.
- Save your hotel's Korean name, address and location.
- Check the final usable subway transfer, not just the first train.
- After subway service ends, compare a suitable N-bus with a taxi.
If your phone battery is low, save the hotel address and route first. You can deal with the other details while the phone is still working.
1. Ask the Stall About Trash Before You Leave
Finding a public rubbish bin after eating street food can be surprisingly difficult. A market may have dedicated collection points, but that doesn't mean you'll see a bin beside every food stall.
Before walking away, look for the vendor's cup return, food-waste container or skewer collection bin. Some stalls have their own way of collecting disposable cups and wooden skewers.
If you can't see where things go, ask the person who sold you the food.

Be especially careful with wooden skewers. A sharp skewer sticking out of a cup or rubbish bag can injure someone handling the waste. Follow the stall's disposal instructions and keep the pointed end safely contained until you reach the designated collection point.
Don't leave cups or skewers beside a subway entrance, bus stop, curb or flower bed just because you can't find a bin.
Finding somewhere to throw things away can be frustrating for Koreans too. I usually keep small rubbish with me until I see an appropriate bin. If the waste is too messy or bulky, I ask the stall whether it can be returned there.
If the vendor can't accept it, I carry it securely until I find a suitable disposal point. A small spare bag is useful when you're planning to try several snacks at an outdoor market.
Don't assume that a convenience store or café has to accept rubbish bought elsewhere. Ask before using a business's waste bins.
If you're eating inside a covered market, check whether the market provides a shared collection area. Returning your cups and food waste before leaving is usually much easier than carrying them all the way to the subway.
2. Confirm the Restroom Is Open and Accessible
Subway stations, market facilities, shopping malls and department stores can be useful places to look for a restroom.
But a restroom shown on a map isn't automatically one you can enter right now. The building may be closed, the restroom may be behind a locked entrance, or it may be inside the subway's paid area.
Start with Naver Map or another local map app and search for 화장실, which means restroom or toilet.
Seoul Metropolitan Government also recommends using Smart Seoul Map to find public restrooms. Its guidance directs users to the city-life map and public-restroom layer.
Subway station — check which side of the ticket gates the restroom is on.
Public market — look for facility signs or ask the information desk.
Shopping mall or department store — check whether the building is still open.
Café or restaurant — ask staff; restrooms may be for customers or require an access code.
A station can be especially useful late in the evening, but don't exit the fare gates just to search for a restroom without checking its location. You may be able to reach one while staying inside the station.
If you need step-free access or an accessible restroom, check those facilities separately rather than assuming the nearest restroom is suitable.

If you're near a staffed station office or market information counter, asking there can save time. Someone who works in the building is more likely to know whether the restroom is open than an old online review.

3. Save Hotel Details While Your Phone Is On
A phone at 8% battery is a different problem when you're standing outside a market late at night. You may still have enough charge to find the hotel, but not enough to keep checking maps, receiving messages and arranging a taxi.
If the battery is running low, switch on your phone's low-power mode and save the information you need before doing anything else.

Include the building number and address details where available.
Complete route home
Save the boarding station, direction, transfer station and final destination.
If your hotel is in a large complex, save the entrance location too. The main road address might not be the same place where a taxi should drop you off.
A screenshot is useful if mobile data drops out in an underground station. It also gives you something to show a staff member when you're struggling to pronounce the destination.
If you're still at a staffed restaurant or inside a market, that's a good time to confirm the hotel route. Waiting until you're walking along an unfamiliar street makes it harder to solve a low-battery problem.
If you expect to need a taxi, open the app while you still have data and battery. Check whether the account, destination search and payment method are working.
If the phone shuts down completely, go to a nearby well-lit, staffed location such as a station office, open convenience store or hotel lobby. Use a printed booking confirmation or written hotel address if you have one.
A small paper hotel card can be surprisingly useful. It doesn't need mobile data, an account or a charged battery.
Avoid relying on a stranger's phone when you can ask official station staff or a staffed business for directions. Keep your valuables with you while arranging help.
4. Check the Last Transfer to Your Hotel Station
The last usable subway trip depends on the line, station, direction, date and transfer.
A train may still leave the station you're standing in while the connecting line you need has already finished service.
That is why checking the final train at your current station isn't enough.

Open Naver Map or KakaoMap and search the actual hotel destination. Look at the complete journey, including the walking time between platforms if you need to transfer.
At a large interchange, the walk between lines can take several minutes. A route that looks possible on paper may be difficult when you have only a very short connection and don't know the station layout.
Don't assume that the final train always travels to the end of its line. Some late services terminate earlier, so the destination shown on the train matters.
Train schedules can also change on weekends, public holidays and during special events. If you're attending a festival or staying out particularly late, check the schedule for that date.
If you're at a night market and still deciding whether to order another snack, check your return trip first. That small decision can save an expensive or complicated journey later.
If the last connection is too close for comfort, consider leaving earlier or finding another route before service ends.

5. Check the N-Bus Route and Direction
When the subway is no longer an option, Seoul's late-night buses may help.
Seoul Metropolitan Government's March 2026 guidance lists 14 N-series night-bus routes, commonly called 올빼미버스 (Owl Buses).
The city's network overview gives an operating window of approximately 11 PM to 6 AM, with a published adult card fare of ₩2,500.
That doesn't mean every N-bus starts at 11 PM or serves every stop until 6 AM. First departures, last departures and intervals vary by route, and the time listed at the route's starting point isn't your pickup time.
To find a suitable bus, search your destination in a local transit app after normal subway service ends.
1. Confirm that the route passes near your hotel.
2. Check the direction at your exact boarding stop.
3. Look at the live arrival estimate, if available.
4. Check how far you'll walk after getting off.
5. Confirm that another bus is actually expected.
The direction is important. Two stops with similar names may be on opposite sides of a major road. Standing at the wrong stop can mean watching the bus you needed pass in the other direction.
Some N-bus routes run long distances across Seoul. If the route takes you close to the hotel but leaves you with a lengthy walk through an unfamiliar area, compare the total journey with a taxi.
Night buses can have longer intervals than daytime buses. If the next bus is far away, don't assume waiting is automatically the best choice just because its fare is lower.
A night bus can be particularly useful when the route runs directly between your current neighborhood and the area where you're staying. If it requires a complicated transfer, its advantage may disappear.

Open on YouTube →6. Use a Taxi When the N-Bus Doesn't Fit
A taxi may be the easier choice when the night bus travels in the wrong direction, the wait is too long, the weather is poor or everyone in your group is tired.
It's also useful when you have a hotel that's a long walk from the nearest N-bus stop.
The first thing to prepare is the exact destination. Show the driver's app or navigation system the hotel's Korean name and street address rather than saying only "Myeongdong" or "Gangnam."
If you're using a taxi app, confirm the license plate or assigned vehicle information before getting in.

Remember that Seoul standard taxi fares include late-night surcharges between 10 PM and 4 AM, with the highest standard-taxi surcharge during the period from 11 PM to 2 AM.
The fare can also change with tolls, the selected taxi service and a journey outside Seoul. If you're comparing an app's estimated fare with a street taxi, check whether extra booking or service fees apply.
If the app is already set to automatic payment, don't pay the driver the same fare again without confirming a failed charge.
You don't have to insist on using public transportation just because it's cheaper. If the bus requires a long wait and a difficult walk at the end, compare the total time, cost and convenience.

For severe symptoms, trouble breathing or another medical emergency, seek urgent help rather than waiting to reach your hotel.
Before leaving the market, deal with your rubbish, find a restroom if you need one, and make sure you can still get home. Knowing the hotel address and checking the final connection early are the two things most likely to make the end of the night easier.
