Before paying for a SIM, eSIM or Pocket WiFi in Korea, check five things: device compatibility, carrier lock, required phone functions, how your group will travel, and activation or return rules.

1. Check the Exact Phone Against the Exact Product
A phone can support eSIM in general and still fail the compatibility rules of a particular Korean or travel eSIM product.
Check:
Sales region if relevant
The provider's supported-device list for the product you're buying
LG U+'s visitor guidance, for example, publishes its own device conditions separately from a phone manufacturer's generic eSIM support list.
LG U+ suggests dialing *#06# on your phone and checking whether an EID appears. An EID indicates that the phone has eSIM capability. It doesn't guarantee that every Korean travel-eSIM product will work on that device.
If your phone model or sales region isn't clearly supported, contact the provider before paying. That's particularly important for a product with strict refund or reissue conditions.

2. Check the Carrier Lock
An eSIM-compatible phone can still reject another carrier's SIM or eSIM when the device is locked to its original network.
Check the lock status with the carrier or in the device settings before departure.
On supported iPhones, open:
Look for No SIM Restrictions
According to Apple, "No SIM Restrictions" indicates that the iPhone is unlocked. If the phone is locked, contact the original carrier about unlocking it.
Physical SIM users should check the same underlying restriction before buying another carrier's card. On Android phones, the checking method can vary by model and carrier.
Pocket WiFi doesn't replace the phone's SIM and therefore avoids this particular device-lock issue. Your phone connects to the router over Wi-Fi instead.

3. List the Phone Functions You Actually Need

A Korean phone number, SMS reception and formal Korean mobile identity verification are separate functions.
LG U+'s visitor-SIM guidance demonstrates the distinction: some Voice/SMS products can receive verification texts for services such as restaurant or taxi reservations, while banking and government identity verification isn't supported.
If you only need maps, translation and messaging, a data plan may be enough. But if a restaurant needs to call you, or an app asks for a Korean SMS code, check those functions on the exact plan before buying it.
Don't assume that receiving an ordinary SMS means the number will work for Korean banking, government services or other formal identity checks.
4. For Pocket WiFi, Check How the Group Will Move
Pocket WiFi can connect several phones or tablets to one device. That works well when the group stays together.
One shared Pocket WiFi can't give both groups an independent connection.
If the group separates for shopping, sightseeing or evening plans, anyone away from the router needs another connection for live maps, messages or taxi apps.
Also include the rental work in the decision:
Carrying the device
Deposit or loss/damage terms
Pickup
Return location and deadline
Decide who will carry the router and who will return it. If one traveler leaves Korea earlier than the others, the return plan matters just as much as the rental price.
5. Read the Activation, Reissue and Return Rules
For an eSIM, check:
How long after purchase can it be activated?
Can it be installed again after deletion?
When does it become non-refundable?
For Pocket WiFi, check the pickup, deposit, return location and return deadline.
As one current product example, LG U+'s visitor data eSIM has the following conditions:
Activate within 60 days after purchase.
Start of usage period
The purchased service period begins with the first mobile-data use.
Reinstallation / reissue
Once installed, the eSIM cannot be reissued. A deleted profile cannot simply be restored.
Refund
The published visitor data-eSIM terms state that purchases cannot be canceled or refunded after payment.
These conditions belong to that LG U+ data-eSIM product, not to every eSIM sold for Korea. Other products, including bundled transport passes, can have different refund and validity rules.
Make sure your phone is compatible and you have reliable internet access for installation. If activation fails, contact the provider before deleting the installed profile.
