The airport journey usually happens once. Daytime appointments and the trip back to the hotel can repeat across several days.

1. Compare Actual Hotels, Not Area Names
Suppose the final choice is one hotel in Myeongdong and one in Hongdae. Search both actual hotel pins against the same three routes.
Airport → Hotel A
Hotel A → most repeated daytime area
Likely 10 p.m. location → Hotel A
Hotel B — Hongdae
Airport → Hotel B
Hotel B → same daytime area
Same 10 p.m. location → Hotel B
This catches differences hidden by a neighborhood label: which subway entrance you actually use, how far the hotel sits from the station, and whether the late-evening trip needs another transfer.
If your trip includes a fixed appointment, such as a clinic visit, health screening, concert, business meeting or reserved class, include it in the route comparison. Those times are harder to move than ordinary sightseeing.
2. Myeongdong — A Central Base for a Mixed First Trip
Myeongdong works well when the itinerary mixes central sightseeing, shopping, markets, Namsan and K-beauty. City Hall, Namdaemun, Euljiro and the Jongno side of central Seoul are relatively straightforward to reach.
The area also has a large concentration of hotels, restaurants and services used by international travelers.
Read the actual address, though. A hotel near Myeongdong Station and one near Euljiro 1-ga can produce different daily routes even when both are marketed as "Myeongdong."
Hotels toward the Namsan side can also involve slopes, while properties on the Euljiro side may work better with a different subway line.
3. Hongdae — Strongest When Your Evenings End Here
Hongik University Station is served by the AREX all-stop train, which connects with Incheon Airport. For a multi-day stay, also map your repeated trips to Jongno, Gangnam or Jamsil.
The larger advantage is the evening. Hongdae, Yeonnam and Hapjeong keep cafés, restaurants, shopping and nightlife close to the accommodation after daytime sightseeing ends.
If you regularly finish the day in this part of western Seoul, staying here removes the late ride back across the city.
The word "Hongdae" can also cover a broad hotel-search area. Check the actual walking distance to Hongik University Station and whether the street around the property matches the noise level you want.
4. Jongno / Insadong — Put Historic Seoul Outside the Hotel
Jongno and Insadong work especially well when Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, Ikseondong and museums make up a large part of the trip.
Several sightseeing blocks can then connect on foot or with short local journeys. A day can move from a palace to Insadong, dinner in Ikseondong and an evening walk without a cross-city return.
Repeated Gangnam, Jamsil or Hongdae commitments change that advantage, so include those fixed trips in the map comparison before booking.
5. Gangnam — Use Fixed South-Seoul Appointments as the Anchor
Gangnam becomes a strong base when the itinerary already contains appointments south of the Han River.

COEX exhibition or business meetings
Apgujeong / Cheongdam shopping
Jamsil concert or Lotte World
These fixed-time plans can justify staying south even on a first Seoul trip.
"Gangnam" is also a broad label. Gangnam Station, Sinnonhyeon, Samseong and Cheongdam create different routes, so use the actual hotel pin and don't rely on the district name alone.
6. Seoul Station — Useful When Transport Is Part of the Trip
Seoul Station is a practical candidate when the trip includes AREX, KTX, a short Seoul stop or several large suitcases.
It can simplify:
A KTX trip to another Korean city
One- or two-night Seoul stays
Frequent luggage movement
The station solves transport efficiently. Map the sightseeing and evening routes separately before using it as a multi-night base.
When Another Area Makes Sense
Consider Yeouido for repeated business or Han River plans, Jamsil for Lotte World or concerts, Seongsu for repeated east-Seoul schedules, and Itaewon / Hannam for Yongsan, international dining and nightlife. If those places appear only once in the itinerary, keep the main five in your comparison.
