Last verified: September 21, 2026 · Bank of Korea foreign-resident remittance guidance reviewed.

For many foreign workers and long-term residents, overseas remittance is not an occasional financial task. It may happen every payday.

The most visible number on a transfer screen is usually the fee. The more useful number is the amount that reaches the recipient.

For a ₩1,000,000 transfer, compare:

KRW sent → exchange rate used → transfer fee → intermediary/recipient deductions → amount the recipient actually receives.

A lower transfer fee does not always mean a cheaper remittance

Service A charges ₩3,000. Service B charges ₩8,000.

That makes A look cheaper until you compare the exchange rate and any additional receiving or intermediary-bank fees.

A useful comparison uses the same sending amount, same destination country, same receiving method and same time.

Do not compare a bank quote from Monday with an app quote from Thursday and call the difference a fee advantage.

Be careful with the 2026 “$100,000 no-document remittance” headline

Korea changed parts of its foreign-exchange system, and simplified remittance limits for Korean residents have generated many headlines.

Those headlines should not be copied directly into guidance for foreign residents.

Bank guidance separates foreign-resident remittance routes from the ordinary resident route that excludes foreigners.

Do not assume that a general resident remittance headline automatically applies to a foreign resident in Korea.

Salary earned in Korea has its own documented route

The Bank of Korea’s current foreign-exchange FAQ addresses foreign residents who want to remit Korean salary, pension or qualifying income earned domestically.

That income can be paid overseas through a foreign-exchange bank without a separate Bank of Korea filing in the circumstances described in the regulation.

The resident must provide the designated foreign-exchange bank with documentation showing how the funds were acquired, such as salary statements confirmed by the employer.

This is why employment and income records matter even when the transfer app itself looks simple.

Keep salary documents while you live in Korea

Do not throw away every payslip once the monthly salary has reached the Korean account.

You may later need to show where the remittance funds came from.

If you changed employers, keep records from both periods.

If the money has another origin—property, investment, business income or a large private transfer—the applicable route can be different. Ask the bank before assuming the salary process covers it.

Compare banks and registered remittance services on the same terms

Ask:

  • What exchange rate is being used?
  • What is the sending fee?
  • Can another bank deduct an intermediary fee?
  • How much is expected to arrive?
  • How long is the quoted route expected to take?
  • What happens if recipient details are wrong?

Low-cost remittance services can be convenient, especially for repeated smaller transfers, but check that the provider is legally registered and that the route supports your destination and purpose.

“Zero fee” is not a complete price

A transfer can advertise no sending fee while earning more through the currency conversion.

Another provider can charge a visible fee but use a stronger rate.

Compare the final recipient amount, not only the marketing label.

For a first transfer, verify recipient information before sending a large amount

Check the beneficiary name, account number or IBAN where used, receiving bank and SWIFT/BIC details.

If practical, a smaller initial transfer can confirm that the account information works before you move a much larger balance.

International-transfer corrections can be slower and more expensive than correcting a domestic transfer inside Korea.

Save the remittance receipt and transaction reference

If the recipient says nothing arrived, the useful information is:

transfer date, sending amount, destination currency, recipient bank and transaction reference.

That gives the bank or provider something to trace.

The next Series 17 article looks at the same transaction from the receiving side.
