Online King Sejong Institute is much easier to understand once you stop treating it as one giant free Korean course.
It currently runs three different study formats, and the actual course cards show the information that decides whether a class fits your life: level, language, Korean Standard Time schedule, enrollment window, course dates, available seats, certificate status and fee.
Need regular teacher contact? Look at Lecture Assisted. Need feedback with fewer live sessions? Look at Learning Assisted. Need full timing freedom? Use Self-learning.
The three course types are genuinely different

For Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced regular Lecture Assisted courses, the official FAQ currently describes a structure with 10 live video lectures, two assignment-feedback points and an achievement assessment.
Learning Assisted uses three live video sessions, required assignment feedback and additional self-directed work.
Self-learning removes the fixed live schedule entirely.
A real course card tells you more than a generic review

This is the kind of evidence that matters.
“Online KSI is free” is too broad to make a decision from. A real course may indeed be free, but the class time could be unusable in your country, the level could be wrong, or the seats could already be gone.
Time-zone math is the hidden cost of a free live class
A class listed in KST has to survive your local clock.
Before applying, convert every live session into your own time zone and look at the whole ten-week period, not just the first date.
A course that works on a quiet Sunday this week may collide with work, school or family commitments for the next two months.
The Online KSI site now includes schedule tools built around selected time references, which makes this easier than manually guessing from KST.
Self-learning is broader than beginner Korean
The current self-learning catalog includes introductory and beginner Korean, higher-level courses, conversation courses, Business Korean and Korean for foreign workers.
These courses can run across a much wider window than teacher-led classes. Several 2026 multilingual beginner self-learning courses are listed for the full calendar year.
That makes Self-learning especially practical if your schedule changes weekly.
The trade-off is obvious: the platform gives you access, but it does not create your weekly routine for you.
Choose fixed days before you start.
Check certificate rules before you assume every course issues one
Teacher-assisted course cards may show a certificate or attendance confirmation.
The current Self-learning page explicitly notes that self-paced courses do not issue a completion certificate.
If you are learning for travel or personal interest, this may not matter at all.
If you need proof of study for another institution, read the certificate field on the exact course before registering.
Full courses can reopen
The Online KSI FAQ explains its seat display clearly.
If a class shows 0 / 20, the zero means zero spaces remain out of a capacity of 20.
Registration is first come, first served for these courses. If a learner cancels, a space can reappear.
That gives you a practical response to a closed class: check again during the permitted change period rather than assuming the course is gone for the entire term.

If TOPIK is your deadline, add test practice separately
Online KSI teaches Korean through a structured curriculum.
TOPIK has its own testing format.
If a university application or other deadline requires a specific TOPIK result, do not wait until the course ends before looking at the exam itself.
Study the language in the course, but learn the test interface and timing as a separate task.
