119 is Korea's 24-hour fire, rescue and ambulance number. If the patient's condition is rapidly deteriorating, stop comparing hospitals and call.
1. When to Call 119
The following are examples of situations where immediate emergency help may be needed. They are not a self-diagnosis checklist.
Consciousness or breathing is affected
Call 119 for loss of consciousness, very poor responsiveness, severe breathing difficulty or a severe allergic reaction affecting breathing.
Major bleeding or serious trauma
Heavy uncontrolled bleeding, a major traffic accident, a serious fall or other significant trauma may require emergency response.
Serious symptoms start suddenly
Examples include sudden severe chest pain, stroke-like symptoms such as facial drooping or speech difficulty, or ongoing severe seizures.
Call when there may be immediate danger even if the situation does not match one of these examples exactly.
2. Calling 119: Location, Situation, Patient
1. Give the location
Use the hotel name, building, restaurant, subway station and exit number, floor, landmark or map location.
2. Say what happened
The patient is having trouble breathing.
There is heavy bleeding.
There was a serious fall / accident.
3. Answer questions about the patient
The dispatcher may ask whether the patient is conscious, breathing or bleeding and may give first-aid instructions while help is on the way.
4. Ask for language help
Say: “English, please” or “Interpreter, please.” If needed, hand the phone to hotel, restaurant, station or security staff nearby.

3. What 119 Changes Before the Hospital
Korea's emergency medical system begins before arrival at the ER.

Hospital selection and coordination

Monitoring and necessary care during transport
↓
Transfer to the receiving emergency department
This is why a serious emergency is different from choosing a hospital and taking a taxi on your own.

4. Ambulance Arrival Does Not Decide ER Priority
Emergency departments use medical urgency to determine treatment priority.
Arriving by 119 ambulance does not guarantee treatment before every patient already in the ER. A stable patient may wait while someone with a more critical condition is treated first.
The hospital process can include:
Triage by medical severity
Emergency examination and tests
Treatment
Discharge, admission or transfer to another facility
5. Stable but Need Care Today
A night or weekend illness does not automatically require an ambulance when the patient is stable.

6. 119 Ambulance and the Hospital Bill Are Separate
Korea's public 119 ambulance response and transport do not carry a separate ambulance fee.
Emergency-room consultation, tests, imaging, medication, procedures, admission or surgery can create hospital charges.
