Shopping in Korea · Duty Free vs Tax Refund
Last updated: September 19, 2026
Duty Free and Tax Refund are two different shopping systems. Compare the same product, final price and remaining departure steps.
| Question | Duty Free | Tax Refund |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you shop? | Duty-free channel | Participating ordinary retailer |
| When is Korean tax removed? | Built into duty-free pricing | At checkout or refunded later |
| When do you receive the product? | Airport store: now; downtown/online: often at departure | Usually at the store |
| What may remain before departure? | Pickup | Export/refund procedure |
1. Two Different Systems
Duty-free shopping uses a dedicated duty-free channel. Qualifying Korean taxes are excluded from the transaction under the duty-free system.
Tax Refund applies to eligible purchases from participating ordinary retailers. Depending on the transaction, tax may be deducted immediately or refunded later.

2. Duty Free: Include Departure Pickup in the Purchase
Buying inside the airport departure area is usually straightforward because you receive the product there.
Downtown and online duty-free purchases can require collection from a bonded pickup area on departure day.
Shilla Duty Free currently asks customers to present a passport and flight ticket at the pickup area and recommends collecting purchases 1–2 hours before departure.

3. Tax Refund: Regular Retail Plus a Refund Route
A participating regular retailer can offer immediate tax refund or issue the record needed for a later refund.
You normally take the product with you after purchase. If the item is part of your tourist tax-refund claim, the export and unopened/unused requirements still matter.

4. Compare the Same SKU
For a specific fragrance, cosmetic set, luxury accessory or other planned purchase, compare equivalent products.

+ any refund/export work still required
Also compare when you receive the item. A lower price may be attractive even with airport pickup. In another itinerary, immediate possession and an easier return to the retailer may matter more.
5. Korea’s Tax Benefit Ends at Korea’s Border
Duty-free treatment or a Korean tourist tax refund answers the Korean tax question. Your destination country can still have its own personal allowance, declaration rules and import taxes.
For expensive purchases, check your home customs authority before deciding the final cost.
