Last verified: September 20, 2026 · visa, K-ETA and 2026 temporary-exemption rules rechecked
Before paying for a South Korea trip, check the passport you will actually use, the real purpose of the visit and the date you will arrive.
Those three facts determine whether you need a visa, K-ETA, or neither before travel. A nationality list copied from an old blog cannot settle the question when the purpose or policy date has changed.
Visa required — obtain the correct visa for the activity and stay.
Visa-free + K-ETA required — use only the official K-ETA service.
Visa-free + current K-ETA exemption — travel without K-ETA when every exemption condition fits, then complete the required arrival process.
1. Use the Passport You Will Carry
Dual nationals should choose the passport they will use for the trip before checking eligibility. Use that document consistently for the airline booking, visa or K-ETA, e-Arrival Card when required, and Korean immigration inspection.
Next, state the actual purpose. Tourism and a short family visit can follow a different route from employment, formal study, family residence or another long-term purpose. A passport that qualifies for visa-free tourism does not automatically authorize those other activities.
Start with the Korea Visa Portal or Visa Navigator for the passport, purpose and intended period. Visa applicants should then use the instructions of the Korean embassy or consulate responsible for the application because local appointment and supporting-document procedures can differ.
2. Check K-ETA Separately for Visa-Free Travel
K-ETA is an advance travel authorization for eligible visa-free visitors. It is not a work, study or residence visa.
The official K-ETA service currently states that an approval is generally valid for three years, or until the passport used in the application expires if that comes first. That validity does not determine the length of one stay, and K-ETA approval does not guarantee admission at the border.
KRW 10,000 plus the stated payment-related charge. The official service says assessment normally takes up to 72 hours but can take longer. It does not offer an official paid expedited service.
3. Apply the 2026 Temporary Exemption Only to Covered Passports
Korea extended the existing temporary K-ETA exemption for the countries and regions already covered by it through December 31, 2026, Korea Standard Time.
The extension does not make visa-required passports visa-free. Check, in order, whether your passport qualifies for visa-free entry, whether K-ETA normally applies to that route, and whether the current temporary exemption covers it.
A traveler who is temporarily exempt can still apply voluntarily for K-ETA. One practical benefit of entering with a valid K-ETA is exemption from the arrival-card submission requirement. The K-ETA application fee is not refunded simply because the applicant later discovers that an exemption was available.
This article should be reverified when Korea announces the K-ETA arrangement that will apply after December 31, 2026.
4. Keep Large Non-Refundable Bookings Flexible Until Required Authorization Is Issued
If your trip depends on a visa or K-ETA that has not yet been issued, check the change and cancellation terms before committing to expensive non-refundable flights or accommodation. An application receipt is not travel authorization.
For a visa, processing time and required documents depend on the category and responsible diplomatic mission. For K-ETA, the government's normal review estimate is not a guaranteed approval deadline.
5. Match the Passport and Approval Before the Flight
Compare the passport number, full name, nationality and date of birth on the passport, booking and authorization. A K-ETA does not transfer to a newly issued passport; apply again with the new document.
If the purpose, Korean address, contact details or planned dates change after a K-ETA application, use the official update function when the K-ETA service requires that information to be changed.
A shift from tourism to work or formal study needs a fresh immigration check. Do not treat it as a minor itinerary edit.
6. If You Travel Without K-ETA, Check the e-Arrival Card Next
Visa-free travelers using the 2026 K-ETA temporary exemption may need to submit Korea's e-Arrival Card unless another exclusion applies. Travelers entering with a valid K-ETA are generally exempt from the arrival-card submission requirement.
