Your Korean language institute has accepted you. Before paying for non-refundable travel, match the school’s D-4-1 instructions with the Korean embassy, consulate or visa center that will receive your application.
School admission and tuition → visa documents from the school → Korean diplomatic mission or visa center → visa issuance → entry to Korea → foreigner registration → stay management
The school controls admission. Immigration controls the visa and stay. Keep those two checklists separate.
Check the D-4-1 enrollment terms before sending tuition
A short language course and a D-4-1 registration can have different payment and enrollment conditions.
Ask the language institute four questions before sending a large payment:
- How many terms must a D-4-1 student register for?
- When is the tuition payment deadline?
- What happens to the tuition if the visa is delayed or refused?
- If you booked a dormitory, what is its cancellation deadline?
Read the school’s current refund rules before booking a flight or housing that cannot be cancelled.
Build your visa file from the school and the Korean mission
Study in Korea currently lists the following among the basic documents for General Training (D-4): a passport copy, recent photo, the educational institution’s registration document, a standard admission letter, proof of enrollment or highest education, proof of financial ability and a training plan.
That list is the starting point. Your nationality, school and application location can add requirements.
A document list posted by a student from another country can miss authentication, financial, tuberculosis or family-document requirements that apply to you.
When the school sends its visa packet, compare it with the current page from the embassy, consulate or visa center handling your case.

Follow the exact financial and education-document format
A bank balance figure alone does not complete a financial-proof requirement. Check whose name can appear on the statement, how recent the document must be and whether family-relationship evidence is required when a parent’s financial documents are used.
Education documents can also require a specific form of authentication. Use the instructions for your school and responsible Korean mission rather than copying another applicant’s document package.
Do not build your budget around a single financial-proof figure found in an old blog post. Requirements can differ by case and location.
Keep the entry and Residence Card documents together
Once the visa is issued, save digital copies of your passport and visa information, admission documents, school address, tuition receipt and Korean address.
Foreign nationals who will stay in Korea for more than 90 days are generally required to complete foreigner registration within 90 days of entry. Your school may arrange a group process, or you may need to use the immigration route yourself.
Keep your dormitory confirmation or housing document. Residence evidence can be needed again for immigration and other local services.

Do not start a part-time job before permission is in place
As of September 2026, Study in Korea states that D-4-1 language trainees can become eligible for part-time employment after six months from the date of entry on the visa, or from the relevant status change date.
Eligibility also involves Korean-language requirements, confirmation from the school’s international student adviser and the immigration permission process.
Employment contract → school confirmation and required documents → part-time employment application → approval → work
The permitted hours and conditions depend on the student’s circumstances. Check the current rule for your status before signing a work schedule.

Use 1345 when an immigration rule depends on your status
The Immigration Contact Center handles questions about visas, stay, registration and other immigration procedures.
Current service hours are weekdays from 09:00 to 22:00. After 18:00, counseling is available in Korean, English and Chinese. Dial 1345 from within Korea.
Have your exact status and dates ready. Saying “I am a D-4-1 student, I entered on this date, and I want to do this procedure” gives the counselor a much clearer case to answer.

Keep one document folder from admission to departure
Save the admission letter, tuition receipt, copies of visa documents, visa result, Residence Card paperwork, school enrollment records and housing documents in one folder.
You may need the same information again for immigration, a phone contract, banking or a future stay application.
